Alex Rodriguez Doc Director Explains Why Jennifer Lopez Was Left Out of Alex vs ARod
Alex Rodriguez’s new HBO docuseries Alex vs ARod dives deep into the former MLB star’s life, but one major figure is noticeably absent — his ex-fiancée Jennifer Lopez. According to the show’s directors, Gotham Chopra and Erik LeDrew, that omission was entirely intentional.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chopra explained that the team wanted to focus solely on Rodriguez’s baseball legacy and his history with PED use, not his romantic life.
“In terms of his past relationships, we did refer to them visually in sections about his off-field life,” Chopra said. “But when it came to his most recent high-profile relationship with Jennifer Lopez, we made a conscious effort to focus on his baseball career — and not necessarily make a total biopic.”
Rodriguez and Lopez began dating in 2017 and got engaged in 2019, but the pair called it quits in 2021 after four years together.
While Lopez doesn’t appear in Alex vs ARod, Rodriguez’s ex-wife, Cynthia Scurtis, does. She offers emotional insight into his upbringing and personal struggles.
“He was so stunted when it came to the natural development of a person,” Scurtis said in the first episode. “He was so entrenched in baseball… that’s all he did.”
The two were married from 2002 to 2008 and share two daughters. Scurtis described her ex-husband as a “creature of habit,” shaped by his father’s early abandonment and the pressure to provide for his family from a young age.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez reportedly asked the filmmakers to highlight his recent purchase of the Minnesota Timberwolves, which was finalized in 2025 after years in the making. Chopra, however, said they told him, “Sorry pal, maybe for the sequel.”
Ultimately, the directors made it clear that Alex vs ARod is about the man behind the baseball controversies, not his love life — even if that means leaving Jennifer Lopez out of the story.
