Tate McRae Reacts to Viral Upside-Down Mic Moment at Austin Show: “Apparently I Don’t Sing in My Shows”
Pop star Tate McRae is taking a viral onstage moment in stride — and with her signature sense of humor.
During her Austin, Texas concert on Friday, October 31, part of her Little Miss Possessive Tour, McRae had fans laughing after accidentally singing into an upside-down microphone while performing her hit song “2 Hands.”
In TikTok footage shared by ABC News, the 22-year-old performer was seen mid-performance using a cane for choreography when she lifted the mic upside down and began singing into the wrong end. Realizing the mistake, McRae quickly flipped it back the right way and carried on — earning praise for her professionalism and live vocals.
Despite some online critics questioning whether she was lip-syncing, fans quickly came to her defense. One TikTok user wrote, “You can clearly hear her voice over the back track. She’s not lip syncing — she just has a heavy back track.” Another fan added, “It’s hard to dance and sing live. People don’t realize how much energy that takes!”
On Tuesday, November 4, McRae cheekily responded to the viral moment by posting a TikTok video of herself performing “Purple Lace Bra.”
She captioned it, “Cuz apparently I don’t sing in my shows :)” — a direct nod to the online chatter surrounding the clip.
The “Greedy” and “Sports Car” singer is currently wrapping up her Little Miss Possessive Tour, which kicked off on March 18 in Mexico City and has taken her across Europe, Canada, and North America. The final show is scheduled for Saturday, November 8 at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
In a recent TIME100 Next interview, McRae opened up about how she stays grounded on the road.
“On tour, I’ll write in my journal,” she said. “I don’t get the chance to create full songs, but it’s my comfort place. It doesn’t really feel like work.”
