Leighton Meester Says Toxic Workplaces Inspired Her Role in HBO’s ‘I Love LA’

Leighton Meester is getting real about how her own experiences shaped her latest TV role.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the 39-year-old actress revealed that the “toxic work environments” she’s been part of throughout her career helped her connect with her character in HBO’s new comedy series I Love LA.

Meester plays Alyssa, a high-powered Los Angeles publicist and boss to Maia (played by series creator Rachel Sennott). The show explores the chaotic and often hilarious world of young professionals trying to make it in LA — a world Meester says felt all too familiar.

“I’ve been in toxic work environments,” Meester admitted. “I think a lot of people have experienced that — being around bosses who don’t uplift you, or situations that just aren’t healthy. That part definitely rang true for me.”

Sitting alongside costar Josh Hutcherson, who couldn’t help but tease her, Meester joked about how common those situations are in Hollywood.

“In this industry, that’s happened to you?” Hutcherson said in mock shock, prompting Meester to laugh and respond, “I know. It’s shocking.”

Despite drawing from tough real-life experiences, Meester said filming the show was the complete opposite.

“It was really fun to play with those dynamics in a safe, comedic environment,” she explained. “That freed me to really enjoy the thrill of the ride.”

Hutcherson, who plays Maia’s boyfriend Dylan, also related deeply to his on-screen persona.

“Dylan’s a planner,” the actor said. “He likes structure and logic, and I definitely relate to that. But I also seem to attract chaos, so it’s a constant balancing act.”

Alongside Meester, Hutcherson, and Sennott, the I Love LA cast includes Odessa A’zion, True Whitaker, and Jordan Firstman. The series follows Maia and her ambitious group of friends as they navigate love, work, and identity in Los Angeles.

New episodes of I Love LA premiere Sundays at 11 p.m. ET on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
